Some people like armrests, some people don?t. It’s partly personal preference, but there’s usually a reason.

A chair user who sits for long periods of time without moving around much needs arm support, or they will feel strain in their shoulders and back soon enough. Someone with limited upper body balance benefits from armrests for stability. They are also helpful during transfers, to do pushups for pressure relief, and some armrest designs do double duty protecting clothing from the wheels.

Armrests sometimes are a physical obstacle that forces the user to extend their arms further out sideways during wheeling. This is sometimes a function of setting them – or the main wheel axles – at the correct height, though not all types are adjustable. The armrest height should be set so that your forearms rest fully on the armrest as you sit straight without leaning to either side, but not so high that they push up on the shoulders.

If the user needs to sit at a table or desk, choose desk type arms, or ones that can swing away.

Some armrests can be removed easily, and some are attached at the rear where they pivot to flip up, so you would need to use tools to remove them. It is best to choose some type or armrest, since they can always be removed if not preferred.
