Whether the Surge and the Surge LT suits you, you will receive the same all-in-one oval with the Gription Strip. There is one difference between the two, and that is the size and weight of the oval. The Surge employs a larger profile oval that measures 1 1/2” long (top to bottom)with a weight of 20 ounces. A smaller profile oval graces the Surge LT (a smaller gripping surface for those with smaller hands) and boasts a lighter weight. The length of the Surge LT is 1 1/8”,and it weighs only 16 ounces – just a hair more than a standard, uncoated handrims (which typically weighs 13-15 ounces).

I’ve been a paraplegic since 1980 (injured at age 12), and I’m 58 now, so I’ve tried a lot of push rims over the years. I’ve owned 20+ chairs, from 80’s aluminum chairs to titanium, and I’ve used every rim on the market from 1980 to 2015. I have only used Surge rims for the last 10 years, never found anything better.

The shape fits my hands better than round rims. The rubber strip is critical, its makes a big difference. It gives solid grip uphill, even in wet, I cannot imagine using a no grip round rim anymore. I currently use three daily chairs and every one has Surge rims: a 16” TiLite aluminum at home, a 16” TiLite Ti ZR for the car and places I go, and an 18” TiLite Ti ZR at the office.

Durability has been excellent. I can go 4–5 years without any issues with the rubber strip. If it ever starts to lift a little after years of use, a small amount of glue puts it back in place. Highly recommend.
