Product Help – Seat Width Possibly one of the most important measurements, selecting the correct seat width is crucial for ensuring the best performance of your chair, as well as ensuring good posture. When it comes to seat width, remember, bigger is not better. Your seat width should be as narrow as possible. However, your hips should not contact the sides of the chair.   How to take the measurement Place a book on each side of your hips and then measure the distance across the inside width. Add 1″ to this measurement to allow for a 1/2″ of space on either side of the chair. This should be enough space to allow for movement and clothing. If you are currently using a wheelchair and you are comfortable with its fit, just measure the width of the cushion side-to-side.   As seat width determines the overall chair width, your choice will affect overall chair performance. A chair even a fraction of an inch too wide can create accessibility problems. Try to resist ordering extra inches to tuck in your winter coat, the extra width is most likely not in your body or chairs best interest.

Product Help – Seat Depth One of the most important selections when building your chair is seat depth. Choosing a seat that’s too deep may result in poor posture and difficulty in body positioning. A seat depth that is too shallow could result in unwanted pressure on your “sitting” or ischial bones leading to skin breakdown. Too little seat depth can also lead to less stability and support, as well as fatigued tendons and muscles. Remember, the type of backrest used can affect a chair’s seat depth. A sling backrest allows you to sit farther back in the seat while a solid backrest tends to position you farther forward in the seat.   How to take the measurement The best way to determine the correct seat depth is by what feels best to you over the long-haul. If you are comfortable in an existing chair, measure the seat from front-to-back and you have your seat depth. Otherwise, sit all the way back in a chair with a tape measure flush against the back, measure to the bend in your knee and subtract one or two inches. Seat depth is measured as the upholstery length from the front of the seat sling to the back post. The most common seat depth is 16”.
