Since 1973, The University of Alabama at Birmingham's Spain Rehabilitation Center has received federal funds to operate a Model Regional Spinal Cord Injury Care System (UAB-SCICS). This system is one of eighteen such systems of care existing in the United States today.

The Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of Delaware Valley:
Jefferson, in affiliation with the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, is designated as one of the nation's 16 Model Spinal Cord Injury Centers by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) in the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), and the only one in the Delaware Valley.
